The structure, which earned its name for its view into the Mediterranean Sea, has long been eroding naturally. The natural monument has attracted visitors from all over the world and been featured in many films and television shows, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”

Authorities recently installed signs to warn tourists from walking across the arch to take photos, BBC reported. The collapse of the Azure Window was not expected imminently, however, Malta leaders said.

High waves and heavy storm winds toppled the structure, according to locals, who came to the beach to photograph the remnants of the arch.
“There was a big raging sea beneath the Azure Window,” nearby resident Roger Chessell told the Times of Malta. “Suddenly, the arch collapsed into the sea with a loud whoomph, throwing up a huge spray.”
